When I first started playing BF2 I knew that the game was a rank progression type of game. I DIDN'T care. What I was most exicited about was the possibilities the game presented. There were wicked weapons and vehicles and planes and a game style that promoted team play. I was in heaven. For a guy who was playing Quake online with a 56k modem and thinking that it couldn't get better years ago this was a modern marvel.
I really enjoyed the game early on but was pwned and artied so often that I "gave up for a while (9 months). When i came back to the game I started playing better and suddenly I was getting medals and badges. I was not sure what the requirements were that I met to get these badges, so I researched and found sites like this one that explained it all. This prompted me to quit playing assualt and spec ops and branch out playing other kits and "working" for stats and ranks. I really enjoyed this part of the game too. But it also brought a fair amount of frustration out in me when I would get 6 knife kills IAR or 19 kills IRA just missing the "candy". I became a stat junkie ,always going for that one badge and getting mad or sad depending on how the game went that round...etc.
Now that the stats have been down for awhile I am rediscovering the game for what I had originally bought it for, a realistic FPS with rag doll physics, great team play, a variety of strategies, and a great community.
The long and short of it is that I have quit worrying about my stats and have started to play the game for nothing else then the enjoyment and fun it provides.
I encourage you all to play for the FUN of it, the stats will be back sonn enough.

Since I learned of the stats issue, I haven't logged in to play. My interest is pretty low with there being no stats. As was already mentioned, there's plenty of other games out there that I can play instead. I chose BF2 because the stats system was interesting to me.

Playing for numbers? What happened to playing for fun? StarCraft only had ladder stats, yet everyone played UMS and open call with bots. They still do.

Aha, joke? I hope so.
I wish people would stop talking about realism in an arcade FPS, i mean wtf. I for one, have never cared for stats, i play the game for sheer fun.
