1. Installing America's Army 2.8
1.1. Downloading AA v2.8 full version
- Because AA v2.8 is such a huge file, it is highly recommended that you use a download manager to download the file. Using a DL-Manager will allow you to 'resume' the download on another server and you waon't have to download the whole file again.
- Internet Explorer users have even no other choice than using a download manager since (by default) Internet Explorer can't handle files larger than 2 gb. For people who use another browser (like Firefox or opera), it is still recommended to use a download manager.
- Make sure that the download is 100% completed. If not, you won't be able to install the game.
Some available download managers:
1.2. Downloading AA v2.8 patch
While it isn't strictly needed to use a download manager, it can never hurt. For more infor on download managers, see 1.1.
Also know that it is only possible to upgrade to 2.8 when you have already version 2.7 installed. Upgrading from an older version is not possible, since 2.7 only exists in a full download version.
1.3. Installing AA v2.8 the full version
Due to the massive number of changes in the game, here are a few tipps for you when you want to install v2.8:
- Uninstall AA v2.7 completly before installing 2.8! (see 1.5)
- Do not use any of your old *.ini files. The user.ini and other *.ini files are not compatible with v2.8 and will cause problems!
- For some comomn errors when installing AA v2.8, see parts 1.6 till 1.10
1.3. Installing AA v2.8 the patch
- Make sure you have a correct and unmodified install of AA v2.7. In order to be able to patch from 2.7 to 2.8, AA needs to be able to read the registry entries that were made when you installed v2.7. If you didn't install AA v2.7 with the default exe file (for example you unzipped/unrarred it into a folder), or when you have moved the aao folder after installation, the patcher will not be able to install the patch. When you have still the v2.7 full install file, you might try a clean install of AA v2.7 before you try to patch to AA v2.8. To know how to completely remove an old/existing version, see part 1.5.
- For some comomn errors when installing AA v2.8, see parts 1.6 till 1.10
1.5. Uninstalling an older version
- Goto Configuration screen, software, add-remove programs
- Click America's Army
- Hit Uninstall
- Delete manyally the C:\Program Files\America's Army folder
If you want to make sure that everything from the previous version has been removed, you could use a registry cleaner like
RegCleaner 4.3.0.780
1.6. When I try to install, it says 'Low on Virtual Memory'
solution thanks to [EC]Eagle Creek
You need to make sure to install the 2.8 version correctly. If you are getting the low virtual memory error, then do the following even if you think you already did.
- Uninstall whatever version of America's Army you have on your computer now.
- Delete the America's Army directory or whatever directory you installed the old version into.
- Install the 2.8 version.
If you do the uninstall/delete/reinstall and still have problems then maybe it really is just your virtual memory (aka page file) that is too small.
In that case, try increasing your page file to the following values:
- When you have 1024 MB RAM in your PC: Initial size: 1168, Maximum size: 1666
- When you have 512 MB RAM in your PC: Initial size: 1040, Maximum size: 1538
- When you have 256 MB RAM in your PC: Initial size: 520, Maximum size: 768
- When you have 128 MB RAM in your PC: You shouldn't even try to run AA. Read the systemspecs and discover that 256 is the minimum.
To change your vitual memory, do the following:
(It should have to look like this:
click me - except for the numbers offcourse)
- Right click on My Computer or whatever you have it renamed to.
- Click on Properties.
- Click on the Advanced tab.
- In the Performance box click on the Settings button
- Click on the Advanced tab.
- At the bottom click on the Change button under Virtual memory.
- Check the Custom Setting button.
- In the Initial size box put something like above.
- In the Maximum size box put like above.
- Click on the Set button. (if you don't it won't save changes)
- Click on OK until you're back to desktop and reboot if it says you need to.
1.7. Upon Installation i get the mesage 'Not a valid win 32 application' or a CRC error
The installation file you downloaded is corrupted. Sorry to say this, but you need to download the file again. Make sure you use download manager like Star Downloader or FlashGet.
Star Downloader:
http://www.stardownloader.com/
FlashGet:
http://www.amazesoft.com/
1.8. ArmyOps.exe - Entry Point Not Found
Same as above (1.4.)
1.9. Error America's Army Installer Information
You get the following error:
Error America's Army Installer Information
1: The InstallScript engine is missing from this machine.
If available, please run ISScript.msi, or contact your
support personnel for furthre assistance.
To fix this issue, you need to delete the folder "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Driver" from the machine. After that download "IsScript9" from
http://support.installshield.com/kb/file…2/ISScript9.zip . Unzip the above file using the WinZip utility. Double-click the IsScript9.msi file. This installs the IsScript engine, which should fix the issue.
1.10. connection error - T2-BRICK was not allowed
Uninstall the old version, delete the left overs and install the new version of the game.
To uninstall the game properly, take a look at 1.2.

2. Running America's Army 2.8
2.1. Blank dark screen at start up
Your firewall is probably blocking ArmyOps.exe from accessing the net, make sure you have given ArmyOps.exe access to the Internet. If you need to open some ports, heres what you need:
1716 for the game and PunkBuster (UDP)
1717 for the gamequery (UDP)
1718 for master server query (UDP)
8777 for standard UT query (UDP)
27900 for GameSpy (UDP)
20045 for Auth server (TCP)
2.2. Problems with login
- Failed Authentication
Mayby the Authentication or Account Manager is down for some reason.
You can check the network status from here: http://www.americasarmy.com/support/status.php
- Error: Unknown
Same as 'failed authentication'.
- No User Record
Check the network status from here: http://www.americasarmy.com/support/status.php
If everything is workin start the game and go to your 'Personal Jacket', check that you have typed both the username and password correctly, also check that you have checked the 'remember username/password' box.
If you still get the error, go to http://login.americasarmy.com/, click on Expired Account, fill out your username and the eMail of your AA account, then just wait for your new password and you account to be reactivated. After that you can go to back http://login.americasarmy.com/and change your password.
- Timed out
Your FireWall is probably blocking you access to the Internet. Make sure that in your FireWall settings ArmyOps.exe has access to Internet. If you need to open some ports, heres what you need:
1716 for the game and PunkBuster (UDP)
1717 for the gamequery (UDP)
1718 for master server query (UDP)
8777 for standard UT query (UDP)
27900 for GameSpy (UDP)
20045 for Auth server (TCP)
2.3. All seeing eye browser does not work in 2.8
The following codes need to be manually typed into the FILTERS.TXT file that is in your All-Seeing-Eye Directory. After entering the new data into its appropriate spot, save the filters.txt file and restart ASE.

2.4. My game keeps freezing up and i have extreem lag
Inside your game menu, go to Game Tab and uncheck "Dynamic Netspeed". Then while in game, open the console and type "netspeed 7000".
Also, sometimes your game might freeze in result of the new engine. Try shut off all non-active programs on the background like mIRC, MSN, ICQ, Internet Explorer or any other programs.
This bug mostly appears when you run TeamSpeak in the background and you haven't minimized it.
2.5. Reload bug
Very annoing bug that dont let you reload your gun. Jump and drop your gun while in the air and pick it up again, should work.
2.6. Problem Loading Profile
"The UserName you specified could not be located. You may have mistyped it "
"Problem Loading Profile
The UserName you specified could not be located. You may have mistyped it."
If you receive this error when you are trying to log in, please try changing your username to something that is less than 20 characters.
login.americasarmy.com
You should be able to log in there, once in change your username for the time being untill the problem is resolved.
If you are still having account problems, then I suggest you make a post about it. But please limit the posts about this issue as it has a simple fix.
Thanks,
Fr3aky
2.7. 'internet servers failure' - 'Failed to connect to MBS server'
reason:
The America's Army MBS server (server browser) is currently down we do not have any ETA. To see servers switch to the gamespy browser system. We will inform the community when more information becommes available.
source: Official IRC channels
Simple fix to this. Just change your browser to Gamespy insted of the AA one. Check the image below for what to do.
2.8. My console won't open
The controlls have changed as has the one for console. On us keyboards it seems to be ~ and on uk @ To fix press T for team say and press back space to delete the word say. You now see the console and type "bind tab type" with out the " "and tab will now open the console.
2.8. The console text size is too large
To reduce text size, open your user.ini (default place c\program files\america's army\system\user.ini) and find consolefontsize = 8 and decrease the value.
2.9. Insergent Camp/ Dockside and Steamroller are not in my game downlaod
When you try to go to one of these servers you will be asked to download the map. Click yes. Devs must be testing an automated map dwonload system.
2.10. Only 1 real hero video works
This is correct seems the others have not being implemented yet.
2.11. I join a server and everything is birght/wrong colours
Its a know bug in 2.8 that shoud happen rarly. Reconnect and it will be fixed.
2.12. My buddylist/ favourite servers aren't an option to click
They only work if you use the AA bworser and do not work when using the Gamespy server.

3. Punkbuster
3.1. What do i get kicked for?
If you get kicked out of the game, you can check the reason from ArmyOps.log file that can be found in :\AmericasArmy\System\ directory.
Search for a word 'kick' when you find one with your username, you can see the kick reason.
More info about PunkBuster can be found here:
http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=support-aa.php
3.2. Invalid Console: Multiple Consoles (reason)
PunkBuster and the GoAA/SCI are updating there major big system for the 2.3 FireFight patch for you couple of weeks as you should have noticed.
You might be kicked because of this reason;
'RESTRICTION: INVALID CONSOLE: MULTIPLE CONSOLES'
This is not a bug in your AA profile and your PunkBuster is really up to date. PunkBuster thinks that you are trying to hack or duplicate his database of any kind. This is not your fault, it's just a simple problem with PB that they are taking care of. No reason to fear.
More info thanks to TexWiller
If you are you running WindowsXP SP2 you should try this:
PunkBuster doesnt work with 64bit Win. Download this software and try again.
If your motherboard has a nForce chipset? (Nvidea)
If it is download and install these drivers (if you are running WindowsXP and SP1 or SP2):
Source:
Nvidea Downloadatabase; nForce International Driver for nForce Chipset + Windows XP SP2 (Service Pack 2)
More info thanks to N[e]T^F!ghtForm^S{L}
Try and uninstall the game, remove the whole map from the Program Files when uninstalled and still present and then install it into another directory like Games.
It'll look like this; C:\Games\America's Army\
3.3. Inadequate O/S Privileges
Q: Is there some way to modify my system configuration to be an administrator equivalent from PunkBuster's perspective in Win2k/XP Pro?
A: Yes (under Win XP Pro or Win 2K). This can be accomplished by setting certain privileges for the user that will run the game. To do this, first temporarily log in as an Administrator. Then go to Control Panel => Administrative Tools => Local Security Policy. This will open up the Local Security setting window. Expand the Local Policies folder and select User Rights Assignment. This will bring up a list of security settings for the computer. You will need to add the user that will be launching the game to have the following privileges. If the user is logged in while making changes, the user must be logged out and back in for the changes to take effect.
-Debug Programs
-Load and unload device drivers
-Manage auditing and security log
-Modify Firmware environment values
-Profile Single Process
This is done by double clicking on the setting and then the "Add User or Group" button. You can either type the user or group name into the field or click on advanced to select from a list. If you select advanced, you may need to click on the "Object Types" button and make sure all 3 boxes are checked. Then click "OK". Click on the "Find Now" button to generate a full list of all users and groups on the system. Highlight the user you want to add the rights to and click "OK". Keep clicking "OK" untill you are back at the Local Security Settings window. Repeat this process for the rest of the list. That user will now be able to play on PB servers without getting kicked for "Inadequate O/S Privileges".
3.4. blocked O/S Privileges
Temporarily disable other security type programs you have running such as anti-virus, process guard, SDProtector, etc. to find out which of them is blocking PB's access to resources on your computer. You either need to run PB without the blocking program(s) or play on non-PB servers. Also make sure you run the game under an Administrator or equivalent account under Windows. If you do have access an admin account, you can right click on the application you want to run and select "Run As". This will allow you to give admin access to that program and should allow you to play with a limited user.
3.5. Insufficient O/S Privileges
Download and run this file from any location, it will check for adware that stops you from being able to play on PB servers. The VX2 adware edits your user rights when it infects your computer, and many programs do not repair this when they remove it.
http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/VX2Finder(126).exe
Click the "Find VX2.betterinternet info" button to make sure that you don't have this adware. If there are no files listed, go on to the last step. If you find the adware files, (it is usually 3 random named dll files) Select all the files found.
Press 'Delete These Files'. The program will delete all files but one that will be deleted on reboot. Allow program to reboot. Once Restarted:
Press 'Guardian.reg'.
Press 'User Agent'.
Press 'Restore Policy'.
Clicking on "find vx2.BetterInternet info" again should show all fields blank.
If you have no adware files, just click on the "Restore Policy" Button
3.6. Error loading PBag.dll
PBag.dll is a simple but important file used by and for PunkBuster. Although DLL files are always important, this one is the key to America's Army. Without this one or an invalid one you can't play.
If you got kicked by PB because of this warning, try updating PunkBuster manually. (This is also done by PunkBuster once you enter a server. *Thank you PunkBuster*) If you are kicked without PunkBuster downloading the files once you are IN the server, you should concidder updating auto/manually.
Go to; America's Army/System/pb > pbweb.exe
Run
pbweb.exe (This is a MS-DOS file)
Once it opened you should press 'any key'
(Just like this one:
Anyhow, it should be updating and you can play withing 10 minutes again. Premit full access to PBWEB.EXE because it's updating your PunkBuster.
Note: pbweb.exe will not give any private information to his own server. It's just an updater.
3.7. No/Mutiple Packetflow
This is a simple but yet a weird problem.
When you will be kicked for this warning, you have 'no packetflow'. Mostly will say 'what is this?'. Well, this is a bug that some servers have, depending on where they are launched and located. You can also have a problem with your own connection and the server. If you would typ in the console (Hit TAB or ~ (`)) 'stat net' you should find the 'Packets' line and if that diget is above 1-10 you are ok.
3.8. Duplicate Login Error
This is a much seen problem but yet easy to prevent.
Some of you remember the -1 kick, Ukick and Ucommand. Well, who doesn't. Hackers used the PunkBuster systeminfo to create a dozen multiple logins on all the users that are in the same server as them.
PunkBuster will reconize your IP and username twice and will say to itself 'Wajooo, that's weird! Let's kick him!' And there you go. Kicked and disconnected.
This problem is also known when you are just chillin' on a good server with friends and - crap - you'll get a Critical Error. Ofcourse you want to get back in the server as fast as possible. Normally this is possible but sometimes your own IP and Username (Character too) will still be in the server because PunkBuster has noticed that you left but the server didn't. Roflol.
Just wait till you see your name disapear in the serverlist (playerlist) and then rejoin your friends (server).
3.9. Violation #diget File Whitelist
The FileWhitelist error was much to be seen in the beginning of 2.2.0 and 2.2.1 of America's Army. Well, this is a Prior Kick/Ban message but not a bad one.
PunkBuster sees that you have other files in your America's Army/System directory. Like some of you will put 'KeyOps' (Great program) in the System Folder . PunkBuster thinks that the file is a bug or a hack and will kick you just in case.
Go to the :\AmericasArmy\system\ directory.
Now, put the screen to show a detailed list instead of icons (view (in the toolbar) > details)
Then all files will be listed with their full name (maybe arrange the width of the column a bit so you see actually the whole name).
There will be files like user.ini , armyops.log , ... (note they have a name, then a dot and then an 'extension' that contains one to three letters.
In that list, there will also be some files without any extension. Those files you have to delete or raname them to contain some extension.
If the kick notification has a file name, it means that you cant have a file labeled as that in your :\America's Army\ folder or some subfolder of it.
3.10. PB Autoupater (Ingame)
The PunkBuster Autoupdater is a very neat function in the new 2.3 FireFight patch!
This one is auto-updating your PunkBuster files in order to keep you, the player, up to date. This is a harmless updater so if you should wait, just give it some time.
Mostly it'll upload for small updates like 5 tot 10 files and with big updates it'll upload like 40 to 50 files.
3.11. PB Auto/Manual update
You can also update PunkBuster offline of America's Army.
Just go to your America's Army/System/pb map and start PBWEB.exe. If you don't need it, maybe this few links would come in handy.
Security Files for all: (place the file in to :\AmericasArmy\System\pb\ folder)
http://www.evenbalance.com/downloads/aao/pbsec.htm
Place all these files in your America's Army/System/pb/htm map:
Player Client Files:
3.12. PunkBuster d3d8.dll kick
This is a kick because your d3d8.dll file, which is an important file for PunkBuster is invalid, damaged or lost.
Run AA/System/pb > pbweb.exe and then it should be updating.
